	DAVE VALENTIN Pensativa.wmv Dave Valentin (born April 29, 1952, in New York City) is a jazz flautist. He learned latin percussion first when he was a teenager, and then switched to flute. Valentin's teacher, Hubert Laws, suggested that he not double on saxophone because of his attractive sound on the flute. He studied at the Bronx Community College. He is of Puerto Rican descent. In 1977, he made his recording debut with Ricardo Marrero's group and he appeared also on a Noel Pointer album. Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, Valentin was the first artist signed to GRP and he has been a popular attraction ever since. Valentin has recorded over 15 albums, combining the influence of pop, R&B, and Brazilian music with Latin and smooth jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. In 2000, he appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54, performing with Tito Puente. Since the mid-2000s, Valentin has been signed to Highnote Records releasing World On A String (2005) and Come Fly With Me (2006). He has done several collaborations with pianist Bill O'Connell and was a nominee for the Latin Grammy Awards of 2006.

	Dave Valentin Flûtiste virtuose du latin jazz, Dave Valentin refuse dêtre enfermé dans une identité musicale purement latine. Certes ses parents sont originaires de Mayagüez à Porto Rico, mais il est né à New York, dans le Bronx, en 1952. Le cosmopolitisme de ce quartier fait quil baigne dès lenfance dans les musiques cubaines et portoricaines, mais aussi dans la soul, le Rythm & Blues et le jazz. Ce sont les percussions qui lattirent dabord, à lâge de dix ans, il maîtrisait déjà congas et bongos, et cest comme percussionniste quil entre à la New York School of Music and Arts de New York. Pour séduire lune de ses camarades flûtistes, il lui demande de linitier : en un mois, il joue mieux quelle ! Lentreprise de séduction échoue, mais à dix-sept ans, il adopte définitivement linstrument. Il trouve alors un éminent professeur en la personne de Hubert Laws, auprès duquel il acquiert une technique irréprochable et une belle sonorité tout en donnant libre cours à sa virtuosité. Et même si son instrument de prédilection est la flûte traversière, il maîtrise une douzaine de flûtes diverses, des flûtes amérindiennes à celles de Thaïlande en passant par le Japon et la Roumanie. Premier artiste à avoir signé avec GRP, Dave Valentín a enregistré depuis 1978 dix-sept albums sous son nom pour ce label, dans lesquels figurent nombre de ses compositions.
